Cow Calf Operation
We have transformed this one-time dairy operation into a thriving cow calf farm. But what does that mean? The primary goal of a cow calf farm is to ensure that both cows and their calves are well cared for. This is where most of our births take place, so we have optimized this operation for the health, safety and comfort of the cows & calves.
Keeping the cows and calves together allows the calf to adjust to life naturally, while still nursing from the cows for the first few months as nature intended. This is imperative for the calves physical and emotional development. Once the calves are weaned from their mother’s milk, they are transitioned to solid food like corn, grain and grass like their adult counterparts.
We bring experts weekly to our cow calf farm to ensure our entire herd is thriving! This includes the veterinary team and nutritionist!
Hay… and LOTS of it!
Our farm in Braintree, VT, spans 519 acres and produces around 1,000 large hay bales annually. While hay is plentiful in the summer months, careful planning and storage are essential to carry us through the long New England winters. Although 1,000 bales may sound like a lot, when you're managing nearly 1,000 head of cattle, it quickly becomes a challenge.
On average, a mature cow consumes 2-3% of its body weight in hay per day. For a cow weighing 1,400 lbs., that’s roughly 28-42 pounds of hay daily. With hay bales on our farm weighing between 1,000 and 1,200 pounds each, we produce our own hay and partner with other Vermont sources to ensure our cattle are well-fed all year long.
